Q1¡¢
How can I make a map layer invisible to tidy up the map screen
?
A1¡¢
Right click on the map screen and select Layer Control, highlight
the targeted layer , uncheck the Visible box under Properties,
click OK to remove the selected layer from the map.
Q2¡¢
The Prefecture and City/County boundaries are not displayed
on the default map screens, how can I make them visible ?

These two layers are not shown by default to keep the map
screen neat. You may however bring them up at any zoom level
by the Layer Control Tool : Right click on the map screen
and select Layer Control, choose either Prefecture or Admin
Districts, check the Visible Box under Properties and click
OK to finish.
Q3¡¢
How can I remove the automatic labels ?

Right click on the map screen and select Layer Control, choose
the map layer concerned, uncheck Automatic Label, click OK
to finish.
Q4¡¢I
have made some changes to override the default visibility
setting of certain map layers. Is there a quick way to restore
to the default view ?

Select any item within the Map Selection Menu on the left
side of the main screen and the map window will refresh with
the original look.
Q5¡¢
My PC barely meets the minimum hardware requirements. At the
zoom-in view of the nationwide map window the panning speed
gets very sluggish. Is there a quick fix ?
A5¡¢Turning
off the railway and highway map layer would speed up panning
significantly. This is done by the using the Layer Control
Tool. See Q1 above, the map layer concerned is ¡°China_Road_Railway¡±.
Q6¡¢How
can I turn off the highlighted shade of selected map objects
?

click on the map screen and choose Unselect.
Q7¡¢My
PC runs an English version of Windows, how can I read the
Chinese names of Province / Prefecture / City / County ?
A7¡¢There
are two alternatives :
Select Help > Data Catalog to bring up the Data Catalog
and point to the last section under the contents page ¨C ¡°List
of Locations in each Dataset¡±. Here you could browse a full
list of locations with English and Chinese names. The Chinese
characters were embedded in the Data Catalog as graphics so
they should display properly no matter what language version
of Windows is in use.
Under Windows XP, bring up Control Panel, choose "Regional
and Language Options", click the "Advanced"
tab, select "Chinese(PRC)" under "Language
for non-unicode programs". You might be asked to insert
the Windows installation CD and you need to reboot to complete
this process.
Q8¡¢What
is the quickest way to view the detailed descriptions of a
data field
A8¡¢Data
fields are identified by an alphanumeric code at the end of
the field name. Select Help > Data Catalog, enter the data
field code, e.g. D7, under the index tab will bring you straight
to the definition table of that data field.
Q9¡¢How
can I save a map screen or thematic map for future reference
or use in other applications ?
A9¡¢Select
System > Save Map Window to save the map screen in a common
graphic file format.
Q10¡¢Can
I create my own symbol for use in ¡°My Map¡± ?
A10¡¢Yes,
this is done by first creating a new symbol in bitmap ( bmp
) format and then place it in the ¡°Custsymb¡± folder within
the China infoMap Program folder. The symbol¡¯s boundary shape
must be square or close to a square. Color depth is limited
to 8 bit ( 256 color ) and image file size cannot exceed 128K.
Customized symbols are selected from the Custom Symbols font
within the Symbol Style Menu.

is the meaning of common road type names found in the city
maps ?

means Road, "Gonglu" means highway, ¡°Jie" means
street,
"Xiang", "Li", "Fang", "Hutong",
